How it works

The unit converter changes values between common units in four categories: length, weight, volume and temperature. Pick a category tab, enter a value, and choose the units to convert from and to. The result is shown with up to six decimal places.

For length, weight and volume, every unit is first converted to a base unit and then to the target unit. Length uses meters (1 inch = 0.0254 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m). Weight uses grams (1 ounce = 28.3495 g, 1 pound = 453.592 g, 1 metric ton = 1,000,000 g). Volume uses milliliters and US customary measures (1 US gallon = 3,785.41 ml, 1 quart = 946.353 ml, 1 pint = 473.176 ml, 1 cup = 236.588 ml, 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 ml).

Temperature works differently because the scales don't start at the same zero. The converter goes through Celsius: °F = °C x 9/5 + 32, °C = (°F - 32) x 5/9, and K = °C + 273.15. Note that the gallons, quarts, pints and cups here are US measures, which are smaller than the imperial units used in the UK.
