How it works

The tip calculator works out how much to tip and how to split the bill. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage (10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%) or type your own, and enter the number of people sharing the bill.

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100, and the total is the bill plus the tip. For example, an 18% tip on a $50 bill is $9, for a total of $59. When more than one person is splitting, the tip and the total are each divided by the number of people, and every amount is rounded to two decimal places. Amounts are shown in the currency you pick, which starts as the one for your region.

The tip is calculated on whatever amount you enter, so decide first whether to tip on the amount before or after tax. Because of rounding to the cent, per-person shares can add up to a cent or two more or less than the total. Tipping customs vary a lot between countries, so the presets are only a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?+

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 20% tip on $45 is 45 x 20 / 100 = $9.

How much should I tip?+

In the United States, 15% to 20% is typical for table service at restaurants, and 18% to 20% is common for good service. Customs are very different elsewhere, and in some countries service is already included in the bill.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?+

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total is also common. Enter whichever amount you want to tip on; the calculator applies the percentage to exactly that number.

How do I split a bill with a tip?+

Enter the number of people and the calculator divides both the tip and the total evenly between them, showing what each person owes.
