How it works
The currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another, using daily reference exchange rates. You can choose from 38 currencies, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, Canadian and Australian dollars, Swiss franc, Mexican peso, Indian rupee and more. The swap button flips the two currencies, and the page also shows your amount in several other popular currencies.
Rates come from the free Frankfurter API, which collects daily reference rates published by central banks and other official sources, including the European Central Bank. Every rate is stored as units per 1 US dollar, so a conversion works out as amount / rate of the source currency x rate of the target currency. Fetched rates are saved in your browser for up to six hours to keep the page fast. If the rates service can't be reached, the converter falls back to a built-in table of reference rates and tells you the date of those saved rates. If the service ever skips a currency, its rate is filled in from that table and the page notes it under the exchange rate.
The Exchange Rate panel shows what 1 unit of each currency is worth in the other, along with the date the rates apply to. These are mid-market reference rates for information only. Banks, card providers and exchange offices add their own margins and fees, so the amount you actually receive will differ. This is not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?+
The converter uses daily reference rates published by central banks and other official sources, such as the European Central Bank, delivered through the Frankfurter API. If that service is unavailable, it uses a built-in table of recent reference rates and shows their date.
How often are the rates updated?+
Central banks publish reference rates once per working day. Your browser keeps a copy for up to six hours, after which the converter checks for fresh rates the next time you open it.
Why is my bank's rate different?+
Banks and card providers usually add a margin on top of the reference rate and may charge fees. The rates here are a neutral reference, so expect the rate you are offered to be somewhat less favorable.
How many currencies can I convert?+
You can convert between 38 currencies, from major ones like USD, EUR, GBP and JPY to others such as BRL, INR, KRW, ZAR and THB.
