How it works
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick way to compare your weight with your height. This calculator divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters: BMI = kg / m². If you choose Imperial, your feet and inches are converted to centimeters (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and your pounds to kilograms (1 lb = 0.453592 kg) before the same formula is applied, so both modes give the same answer.
Your result is shown to one decimal place and placed in one of the four standard adult categories used by the World Health Organization: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), Overweight (25 to 29.9) and Obese (30 or higher). The color of the result matches the category.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not tell muscle from fat, and it can read high for athletes and low for older adults who have lost muscle. These adult ranges also don't apply to children, teens or pregnant women. Treat the result as an estimate, not medical advice, and talk to a doctor about what a healthy weight means for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?+
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a normal or healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
How is BMI calculated?+
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. For example, someone who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9.
Can I calculate BMI in pounds and feet?+
Yes. Switch to Imperial and enter your height in feet and inches and your weight in pounds. The calculator converts them to metric behind the scenes and uses the standard formula.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?+
No. BMI doesn't measure body fat directly, so very muscular people may be labeled overweight, and it isn't meant for children or pregnant women. Use it as a rough guide and ask a healthcare professional for a full picture.
